Mild tension prevailed at Kattedan area here on Saturday when the
town planning wing of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)
demolished as many as 21 illegal plastic building units.
Though
the owners of the plastic units resisted the demolitions, the GHMC staff
with the help of the police went ahead with the demolitions.
Zonal
commissioner of South Zone Ravi Kiran told Express that the residents
of Kattedan, Gaganpahad, Shastripuram and other nearby areas have been
complaining to the corporation over the prevailing pollution in the said
localities for a long time.
These unauthorised plastic units have
been recycling the used plastic material by burning them in the open
causing pollution leading to health hazards like breathing problems,
vomiting, nausea among others. As these residential colonies were
thickly populated, they have been requesting the corporation to remove
the units.
The demolitions which started at 6 a.m. continued up to
10 a.m. under the supervision of city planner and assistant city
planner and others.
Ravi Kiran said that six illegal plastic units near Mir Alam Tank were also sealed by the corporation on Saturday.
