MMC cracks the whip against illegal city handcarts
MARGAO: Cracking the whip on mobile handcarts found to be obstructing the free flow of traffic, the Margao traffic police on Thursday sealed seven such carts from near the city bus stand, seized and handed them over to the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) for further action.
Speaking to TOI, PI (traffic) Prabodh Shirvoikar said that the police acted upon a notification issued by the district magistrate recently “banning parking of handcarts and erecting of stalls by hawkers of eatables, fruit vendors, furniture marts etc within a radius of 50m from all road junctions and traffic islands”.
“The mobile handcarts are required to be moved away once they are shut for business. However, these handcarts are stationed here every day and night obstructing the flow of buses moving in and out of the bus stand. Despite repeated warnings they failed to remove the carts forcing us to seize them,” Shirvoikar said.
Following the police action, a large of group of handcart owners marched to the MMC protesting the move.
