MANAPPARAI: Work on the construction of new office premises for the
Manapparai municipality, undertaken on an outlay of Rs. 75 lakh, is
progressing at a fast pace and is expected to be completed shortly.
The expeditious execution of the project was made possible following
the wake of the utilisation of the municipality’s own land of 5,000
square feet on the Madurai road, a prime location in the town. The
spacious first floor of the full-fledged facility will be allotted for
the council hall where the local body’s meetings will be held. All the
other units and sections will be housed on the ground floor, official
sources said.
The present municipal building was constructed way back in the 1930s
when Manapparai was a panchayat union. The local body is yet to take a
decision on using this old building, located at a stone’s throw away
from the busy bus stand, after shifting to the new premises.
The local residents expect the municipality to use the old office
site for the expansion of the bus stand. This expectation is justified
going by the fact that the bus stand is totally inadequate, neither
accommodating the buses nor providing comfort to the travelling public.
The Municipal Council has already favoured the move for the expansion of
the bus stand, indicating the urgent need for providing minimum
amenities to the passengers.
Gasifier unit
Yet another facility fast coming up in the town is a gasifier unit
being set up by the municipality in its crematorium. This is coming up
on an outlay of Rs. 45 lakh and the works are progressing, sources said.
