Nagercoil to be garbage-free
Solid waste management goes to private firm
As part of its efforts to get
Nagercoil a ‘clean and garbage-free town’ tag, the Municipal Council has
handed over solid waste management to a private firm.
The new solid waste management scheme was inaugurated by Municipal Chairperson M. Meena Dev at a function here on Wednesday.
Later
she said the implementation of solid waste management in 34 wards of
the total 52 wards in the municipality had been entrusted to the private
firm to convert the town into one of the clean towns in the State. The
34 wards would be divided into three zones for the successful
implementation of the programme and the effective functioning of the
workers.
The first zone would cover wards 3, 4, and
26 to 29 and 45; the second zone would comprise wards 8 to 11, 30 to 34
and 13: and the third zone would include wards 12, 20 to 23, 40 to 42
and 46 to 52.
As many as 258 workers would be pressed into service to ensure cleanliness and hygiene in the town.
Of the total workers, 178 would handle man-made garbage carrier. The work would begin from Thursday, said Ms.Meena Dev.
Vice-Chairman Simon Raj, Commissioner Rajan, Municipal Engineer George and other officials attended the function.
