NDMC’s new convention centre will be opened today
NEW DELHI: On Monday, Union home minister P Chidambaram will unveil a new state-of-the-art convention centre of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), which is located adjacent to the NDMC’s headquarters on Parliament Street.
The convention centre has two auditoriums, six conference halls and facilities like videoconferencing and central airconditioning. It has been constructed on the same lines as Vigyan Bhawan.
” The advantage of this convention centre is that it is located i n the heart of the city. The main hall, which is situated on the ground floor, has the capacity to hold 300 people and is equipped with digitally-controlled speakers and projection facilities. The first floor has six conference rooms of different sizes,” said an official . The centre also has an automated underground parking lot for 900 cars and the civic body is planning to rent it to private groups and government agencies for various events.
The plan for constructing the convention centre was conceptualized in 1971. However , construction work only started in 2004 after clearing several roadblocks. ” The original budget for constructing the centre was Rs 61.59 crore which escalated to 103.21 crore by 2007,” added an official.
Meanwhile, NDMC is yet to decide whether it will run the centre on its own or give it to a company to maintain under public-private-partnership model. ”A decision in this regard will be taken soon,” added an official.
