New door numbering system draws flak
Staff Reporter
GUNTUR: Members cutting across party lines expressed concern over the lapses in the new door numbering system at the general body meeting of Guntur Municipal Corporation on Wednesday.
Raising the issue, Telugu Desam corporator M. Rajesh said that new numbering system was creating confusion in the minds of the people. The Town Planning Department has committed numerous errors in writing the wrong street names leading to plenty of problems. There were even instances of passport applications being rejected due to change of door numbers.
Lapses admitted
Clearing the air of confusion, the Commissioner said that orders have been issued to omit the street names and instead every street would be given a number. The name of the locality would be written on a cement sign post at the beginning of the street.
He admitted that there have been lapses in the implementation of the system and sought the cooperation of the corporators. Congress corporators Adapa Kasinath too spoke on the issue.
The meeting was delayed by about 15 minutes and amid uncertainty over the presence of Mayor, deputy mayor Sk. Mohammad Ghouse wore the Mayoral gown and started the meeting. For the first-time corporator, the initiation was fiery as members traded acrimonious exchanges. But he remained unfazed and displayed lot of temperament in dealing with issues. Former Mayor Kanna Nagaraju made a brief presence.
The row over drinking water project consumed a lot of time and little time was left for other subjects. A majority of Congress corporators sought the installation of late YSR statues at major traffic junctions in the city.
