NMC staff strike from Oct 18 for wage hike
NAGPUR: As an ultimatum to civic administration, over 18,000 employees of Nagpur Municipal Corporation, including 5000 sanitary workers and over 3,000 contract workers have decided to go on an indefinite strike from October 18, demanding immediate implementation of sixth pay commission scales for them.
The six employee unions that represent these employees have formed Nagpur Municipal Corporation Employees/Teachers Action Committee and served a strike notice to Mayor Archana Dehankar and additional municipal commissioner Vishnupad Bute (civic administration) on Monday afternoon.
The implementation of six pay commission scales to NMC employees has been held back as government has refused sanction to the move citing very high establishment expenses. A delegation led by S Q Zama of National Corporation Employees Association, Rajendra Thakre of NMC Teachers Association, Jammu Anand of NMC Employees Union, Dilip Deoghade of Kamgar Sena and Vasant Moon of NMC Backward Class Association met Dehankar on Monday and raised slogans against NMC administration.
Anand told TOI, “the state government has no right to withhold implementation of the sixth pay commission for NMC employees. Both Dehankar and civic administration were misleading employees.
The mayor should have moved a no-confidence motion against civic chief for not following the Corporation Act.” he said Anand called the decision of state government rejecting sixth pay commission wages for NMC staff an unfortunate one. He said as per City of Nagpur Corporation Act, 1948, the municipal workers’ wages should be on par with state government employees, he added. A NMC official pointed out that any civic body whose administrative expenditure was above 35% of total expenses was required to seek permission from state government for any further increase in administrative expenses.
NMC’s figure is already at a whopping 68%. If the pay hike is implemented, it will increase to 72%, the official stated.
