No penalty, interest for property tax defaulters
The North Delhi civic body has good news for property
tax defaulters — they can still pay their arrears without being charged
penalty and interest. The chairman of North Delhi Municipal
Corporation’s property tax committee, Rajesh Bhatia, on Monday launched a
much-awaited scheme for settling property tax arrears with immunity
from penalties and waiver of interest.
The scheme
will continue till November 30. Under the scheme, property tax will be
accepted only through pay order or demand draft.
Mr.
Bhatia said property tax worth crores was due against various government
and private organisations and the Income Tax Department was making
efforts to collect it.
Mr. Bhatia said: “On the basis
of feedback received from citizens, it has been found that property
owners want to pay their property tax but are not satisfied with the
assessment orders passed against their properties. Property owners also
believe that a much higher amount of tax is levied on their properties
and hence they choose not to pay the property tax.”
He
said: “On the other hand, the demand increases by accumulation of
interest and penalty over and above property tax demand. Keeping this in
mind, all members of the committee unanimously decided to launch a
settlement scheme.”
The North Delhi Municipal Corporation scheme will continue till November 30.
