Notices sent out for election to Palike standing
BANGALORE: Wait for the standing committees of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike (BBMP) seems to be coming to an end as notices were sent to the councillors, announcing that the elections for the same would be held on October 30.Mayor S K Nataraj on Thursday said notices were sent and the elections would be held a day after the monthly meeting, which is on October 29.
The standing committees have been the reason of protests in the Council.
The Opposition parties have been demanding that the committees be created as there were now only six months left for their term to end.
The Mayor had earlier stated that he would meet Law Minister Sureshkumar on October 18 to discuss the possibility of forming the committees that could complete the entire one-year term even though the Mayor’s term was to end after six months.
According to the Karnataka Municipal Corporation (KMC) Act, 1976, the term of the standing committees is one year from the date of their formation.
Govt may not fund BBMP budget
Adding to the worries of the BBMP, the government may not give the `1,300 crore grants as promised earlier. The Chairman of the Finance and Taxation committee had earlier said the state government had approved the budget on October 8.
The government’s decision of not granting funds to the BBMP would affect most of the works that the council had planned for the city in its `8,848-crore budget in August.
Added to this, there were reports that the funds from the JNNURM too would not make its way to the BBMP. But P N Sadashiva, Chairman of the Finance and Taxation Committee, had earlier stated that if the government had approved the budget without preconditions, it would be binding on them to give the assured amount to the Palike.
