Thrissur: The Thrissur Corporation plans to demolish within a week a few buildings that are old and allegedly unstable.
The Mayor told reporters here on Friday that 92 old buildings in the city had been identified by the Corporation for demolition. “Though notices were issued to the owners to vacate the buildings, the process has been delayed due to stiff resistance,” she said.
But Thursday’s accident in which a dilapidated lodge in the city collapsed killing a man forced the Corporation to take immediate action, she said.
A few buildings, on the verge of collapse, would be demolished in the initial phase, she added. The Mayor appealed to the public to cooperate with the Corporation officials in the drive.
Ramanunny, 69, a palmist hailing from Kollam district was killed after a 70-year-old lodge partially collapsed on the Post Office Road on Thursday. He was trapped under the debris.
Dilapidated
In a similar accident, a hotel building on the Palace Road caved in a few months ago, injuring 13 people. An old fertilizer godown of the Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore had collapsed in Poonkunnam last month.
Many structures in Swaraj Round and busy market places like Jai Hind Market and Rice Market in the city are in dilapidated condition.
Meanwhile, the body of Ramanunny, the victim of Thursday’s accident, was handed over to his relatives after postmortem on Friday.
