The TDP is mulling a ‘no-confidence’ motion against the Mayor
The section opposing the Mayor is ready to support it
VISAKHAPATNAM: With the intra-party differences widening, a section
of Congressmen strongly opposed to Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao’s style
of functioning are firm on his ouster.
The contention of such Congressmen is that in spite of spending
hundreds of crores of rupees on various development schemes, the party
has been facing problems. The approach has been more in the nature of
reaction than being proactive to take advantage of the situation.
Those opposing the Mayor are reportedly biding their time because of
the major political developments that are expected once the Srikrishna
Committee on Telangana submits its report. They intend to take the issue
to the notice of the Union Minister, the minister from the district,
the Rajya Sabha member and others, demanding a change in the leadership.
Claiming the support of a minimum of 22 corporators of the total of
36 that have been sailing with the Congress, the group wants to
intensify its efforts in the interest of the party. “Either he should go
or he will be forced to go,” said a prominent leader.
But the numbers are simply not enough.
One calculation is that two of the independent corporators and five
to six of the Congress corporators will join the new party to be floated
by former Kadapa MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy’s party.
The TDP has been mulling a ‘no-confidence’ motion against the Mayor
expecting corporators switching loyalties to the new party to be floated
by Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy and the other discontented corporators
supporting it. If the TDP moves the no-confidence motion, the section
opposing the Mayor is ready to support it, say sources. But with only
one year remaining, whether the TDP would go ahead with its move
comparing the gain with the efforts that has to be put in, is also
doubtful, says a senior corporator.
Deputy Mayor K. Dorabbai, when contacted about the talk of dissidence
in the party doing the rounds, categorically stated that he was not an
aspirant for the Mayor’s post.
