‘Partial’ eviction drive at Tirunelveli old bus stand

Alerted to a crackdown by Corporation officials,
encroachers evacuated their sites at the Tirunelveli Junction bus stand
on Monday.
Traders temporarily removed plastic crates with fruits and other items well before the officials arrived.
The
swoop netted three plastic crates and two push-carts used by toy and
fruit vendors. The “catch” was taken to the nearby Thatchanallur zonal
office of the Corporation.
Locals expressed surprise
that encroachments on the pavements in front of Shanthi Sweets and along
T.M. Road leading to the railway junction were left out of the eviction
drive.
Elsewhere, parotta stalls continue to do
business on the pavement. Other commercial establishments also have
their advertisement boards and wares on the pavement, hindering
pedestrians, including rail passengers.
“We’ve
decided to remove the encroachments around the bus stand in a phased
manner. The first round was launched this morning. The drive will
continue,” said a Corporation official.
