Pet dogs fed on poison for straysNov. 21: The residents of Venkatapura, who found carcasses of several dogs dumped in their locality on Sunday morning, took some time to realise that almost every stray dog in their neighbourhood had been poisoned to death.
One of the residents’ pet dog was also killed and two more pets that were fed the poisoned meat were in need of immediate medical attention. The residents, who maintained that they were not bothered by the stray dogs, were shocked that someone would go to this extent to get rid of the animals.
BBMP officials say this was the work of some anti-social elements and they are conducting detailed investigations in the incident. “As many as 20 dogs died after being fed on chicken kebabs laced with poison. We have sent one of the carcasses for post-mortem and the remaining have been taken out of the city’s periphery for burial,” Dr Pervez Peeran, joint director, animal husbandry, BBMP, said.
According to Sandhya Madappa of Cupa, the dogs have been clearly poisoned. “The dose of poison seems to be strong as it killed them though they consumed only a little of the meat. The police has promised to increase patrol in the area and we will work on the course of action soon after the lab results are out,” she said.
This is not the first time that some people have taken the law into their hands. The incident of people poisoning stray dogs, which is punishable under the Prevention of Cruelty Act, seems to be on the rise especially in newer areas in the city, animal welfare experts say.
The authorities are worried as they say it looks like a deliberate move. “The remaining food laced with poison, which was found nearby has been sent for analysis,” Mr Peeran said.
“It looks like a deliberate attempt to kill the dogs and we will find the reason soon,” he said.
