Petty issues bound MC
CHANDIGARH: While bureaucrats and councillors of the municipal corporation have been fighting over petty issues like study tours, many crucial developmental projects of the civic body are hanging fire for last many years. Though, the civic body regularly discusses these projects in its meetings, when it comes to materializing these important public-oriented projects, it procrastinates.
Dog pound, permanent meat slaughter house in industrial area, Night Food Street in Sector 47 and multilevel parking in Sector 17 are some of the crucial projects which are being postponed by the MC authorities for last more than five years on one pretext or the other. They have not initiated these projects till date despite criticism from all quarters.
The issue of constructing a dog pound in the city is being raised for last six to seven years, but the civic body has failed even to obtain land for the project. The matter has been raised a number of times during the monthly house meetings of the Municipal Corporation, but due to internal strife amongst municipal councillors and dilly-dallying attitude of the officials, the project could not materialized till date.
Verbal spats between councillors has been a routine affair during the monthly meets, when councillors were seen raising objections to giving land for the dog pound in their respective areas.
The much-awaited first multilevel project in Sector 17 is second such project which has been finally scrapped. The Delhi-based company has almost refused to start work on it, citing financial reasons. This project is also hanging fire for last more than five years and even UT administration has spent lakhs on the removal of underground wires from the multilevel parking site.
The construction of Night Food Street in Sector 47, whose site was inaugurated by former mayor Kamlesh, last year, has not kicked off yet. Besides, the project of permanent meat slaughter house in the industrial area is another crucial project, which has been getting delayed for around five years and residents of the city are still buying spurious meat from various parts of the city.
