Mumbai: The second phase of Census 2011 will take off in the city from February 9, BMC officials said on Tuesday. While the first phase included house-listing and data collection for the National Population Register, the second phase that will go on till February 28 will involve head counting. The second phase will, therefore, also include head-counting of the homeless. Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said a total of 27, 483 house blocks covered in the first phase will be revisited in phase two where details of every individual staying in a house will have to be collected. “As per new census rules, one house block cannot have a population of more than 800 people. Because of this rule the number of house blocks have increased to 27, 850. To count the homeless, ward officials will carry out counting operations at night after identifying areas where people usually sleep and stay on roads and footpaths,” said Mhaiskar.
The same staff that was employed in phase one will also be employed in phase two and enumerators will get an additional amount of Rs 5,000 to carry out the work.
Mhaiskar added that ward level helpline numbers will be re-activated so that those who have not been counted in the said period can inform the respective ward office that they have been left out of the process.
