Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to appoint 2 agencies to curb stray dog menace
PUNE: PimpriChinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will appoint two agencies to catch, sterilize and vaccinate stray dogs. The standing committee had on Tuesday approved a proposal for the appointment.
PCMC veterinary officer Satish Gore said there are around 25,000 stray dogs in the municipal limits. The civic body has been catching the stray dogs and sterilizing them for the past many years at the rate of around five thousand per year. But, the stray dog menace continues due to the high breeding rate. The civic body needs to sterilize 15,000 stray dogs every year for three consecutive years to bring their population under control, he said
Gore said PCMC does not have the manpower to conduct sterilizations on a large scale. Therefore, the civic body has decided to appoint two agencies for the work. “These are qualified agencies and if they fail to achieve the desired results then we will terminate the contracts,” he said.
Last month, corporators cutting across party lines had complained about the increasing menace of stray dogs. At the general body meeting, the corporators demanded that the civic body should take strict action to control the menace.
