Piped supply plan for 5 thousand homes soon

Chennai Metro Water is implementing a Rs 58 crore project to provide
piped water supply to 5,000 houses in Injambakkam, Sholinganallur and
Karapakkam in the next 24 months.
A Chennai Metro Water spokesman
said that the scheme is part of the Rs 452.77 crore Comprehensive Water
Supply Scheme. Interestingly, this comes in the wake of government
already charting out plans to provide piped water supply to 50,000
residents in Nolambur and Karambakkam under a Rs 38.56 crore scheme.
Metro
Water spokesman told City Express that the existing water supply in
Injambakkam is being maintained by extracting water from ground water
sources at the rate of 20 litres per capita per day (LPCD).
He
said in Injambakkam scheme it is proposed to provide feeder main and
distribution system with ductile iron (DI) pipes of size ranging from
100 mm to 700 mm size for a total length of 65,225 metres and
construction of Overhead Tank (OHT) with 35 lakh litre capacity and
Underground Tank (UGT) with 5 lakh litre capacity.
About 2,505 number of houses would benefit under the scheme, the Metro Water spokesman said.
Talking
about the Sholinaganallur and Karapakkam piped water supply scheme, he
said the total length of streets in Sholinganallur and Karapakkam is 117
km with a population of 35,530.
“At present, water from existing
ground water source is being supplied to Sholinganallur and Karapakkam.
The operation and maintenance of water supply is done by Metro Water
with the existing infrastructure and the quantity of water supply per
day is 30 LPCD,” he said.
“The proposal contains providing feeder
main and distribution system with DI pipes of size ranging from 100 mm
to 500 mm size for a total length of 1,18,614 metres and construction of
overhead tanks with 35 lakh litre capacity and underground tank of 2.5
lakh litre capacity,” the Metro Water spokesman said. Under this scheme,
a total of 2,544 homes will get piped water supply.
The funds for
the scheme are part of the state government-sanctioned Rs 879.78 crore
for implementing the works proposed by Chennai Corporation and Chennai
Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board under the Chennai Mega City
Development Mission (CMCDM).
