Pkl MC polls drift further away
CHANDIGARH: In a move which could increase the wait for holding elections for municipal corporations including Panchkula, which were recently upgraded from municipal councils, the Haryana government on Monday passed a bill allowing itself two-and-half years to carry out polls.
The bill was passed amidst strong objections raised by INLD MLA and former ministers Ashok Arora, Ram Pal Majra and leader of BJP legislative party Anil Vijh.
Urban local bodies minister Mahender Partap Singh moved the motion, which was approved by voice vote by the ruling party members. “Increasing the time means giving another tenure of free hand to the babus who have already held the municipal bodies to ransom. As a result, the common man would suffer and lack of public representation would make their life more tough,” said Anil Vijh, BJP MLA from Ambala City.
Notably, Panchkula is among the seven cities where municipal councils were elevated to corporations.
