Planning Committee gives nod for water project
District Planning Committee Chairman N. Chinnadurai gave
his nod for drinking water project to cater to the needs of residents
in 368 villages in 12 panchayat councils in the district.
Presiding over the meeting here on Tuesday, he said the government had allotted Rs.120 crore for this project.
The
Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board authorities would
take up the work soon. The work was scheduled in three phases.
Mr. Chinnadurai reviewed the progress of development projects being carried out through various departments at the meeting.
Road work
Meanwhile, he said road infrastructure would be developed.
The
East Coast Road would be strengthened between Tuticorin and Sathankulam
for a stretch of 65 kilometres at an estimated cost of Rs. 150 crore.
The committee was awaiting approval from the government.
Besides,
the Highways Department officials had been instructed to take up the
most-awaited road project to link Vanchi Maniyachi railway station to
Tuticorin.
Thanking the Chief Minister Jayalalitha
for the facility, he said many rail users would benefit from the road
link up to Maniyachi parallel to the railway track.
A
sum of Rs.110 crore had been earmarked for the facility. He appealed to
the officials concerned to expedite the development works.

Officials
from departments of Rural Development, TWAD Board, Highways, Social
Welfare, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Forest, TANGEDCO and Pollution
Control Board attended.
