Polls to 12 Bengal municipalities on Sept. 21
The State Election Commission on Friday issued a
notification for elections to 12 municipalities, spread across nine
districts of West Bengal, on September 21.
Last
month, the Calcutta High Court directed last month that the polls should
be held on September 21, one of the dates suggested by the poll panel,
rejecting the submission of the State government that elections be held
before September 10.
The polls in 12 municipal
bodies that include Alipurduar in north Bengal to Diamond Harbour in the
south of the State will be next major elections after the recently
concluded rural polls. The electorate is about 8.46 lakh and the outcome
would be an indicator to the choice of the people living in district
towns ahead of the next general elections. “An all party meeting was
held at the office of the Commission during the day. The officials of
the poll panel will hold a meeting with senior government officials on
Monday,” Tapas Ray, secretary of the Commission told
