Premajam to be Kozhikode Mayor

Kozhikode: A.K. Premajam and P.T. Abdul Latheef of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have been chosen as the party’s candidates for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively in the Kozhikode Corporation Council.
Left Democratic Front (LDF) leaders including CPI(M) district secretary T.P. Ramakrishnan and former Mayor M. Bhaskaran announced the names here on Wednesday.
The election to the post of Mayor, which is reserved for women, will be held at 11 a.m. on November 9 and that of the Deputy Mayor’s at 3 p.m.
The elections are a mere formality as the CPI(M) has a majority of 39 in the 75-member council. Besides, the Nationalist Congress Party, a constituent of the LDF, has two members.
Prof. Premajam, 72, was Mayor during 1995-98. She had represented the Vadakara constituency in the Lok Sabha.
