Chandigarh:The Municipal Corporation has decided to increase the price of monthly parking pass from Rs 50 to 150 (for four-wheelers) and from Rs 25 to 50 (for two-wheelers).
The decision was taken in the meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee on Monday.
But with the new rates, pass owners would be able to park vehicles in any paid parking lot in the city — at present, they can park only in specified parking lots.
Paid parking lots exit in Sectors 17, 22, 34, 35, 8 and 9 in the city.
The decision is likely to affect shop-owners and office-goers the most.
Also, the committee decided that blood donors who have donated 50 times or more will be given a free parking pass.
In the meeting, the committee approved a number of steps to improve paid parking lots in the city. Among them is the decision to impose fines on parking contractors for violations.
It was observed that while norms have been specified, these were not being followed by the contractors.
According to rules, a contractor must deploy one attendant every 50 metres to ensure smooth movement in the parking lot. But numerous checks conducted by councillors and officials show that this rule is hardly followed, leading to chaos in parking lots.
Now, non-implementation of this rule will attract a fine of Rs 500.
Further, the contractors will have to give tokens along with parking slips, so that vehicles are parked at designated spots.
Also, the contractor will have to submit a list of attendants — failure to do this will invite a fine of Rs 2,000.
Parking attendants and supervisors not found wearing uniforms or name plates will have to pay Rs 500 as fine. Further, the attendants will have to be present in the parking lot from 8 am to midnight — violation will invite a fine of Rs 500.
The MC had asked the contractors to install CCTV cameras in parking lots. Those who do not install them will be fined Rs 5,000. It has been proposed that for subsequent violations, the fine should be increased.
A proposal to introduce mechanised parking in the city was also mooted. But it was decided that a report will be prepared to study the feasibility of the proposal and ways to implement it.
