“Regularise services of 309 sanitary workers”
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions, Madurai urban
district, claimed victory in their efforts to regularise the services of
309 sanitary workers employed on daily wages by Madurai Corporation.
In
a statement, CITU district secretary, V. Pitchai, said that Assistant
Labour Commissioner N. Govindan, had directed the Corporation to
regularise the services of the 309 sanitary workers who had put in the
mandatory 480 days of service as daily wage workers.
They had been paid Rs. 163 as daily wages which was given on a monthly basis through bank accounts.
CITU Corporation Employees Association, general secretary R. Rajagopal, took up the case with the Labour Department in 2010.
After
perusing through the documents produced by the workers, the Assistant
Labour Commissioner, had given the order, the statement said.
However, Corporation officials said that they were yet to receive the copy of the order.
