Renuka Bai Venkatesh all set to become Mayor
As per Government Order, she is the only eligible candidate
The posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the city
corporation have been reserved for Scheduled Castes Woman and Backward
Classes and Minority (A), according to an order issued by the State
government on Thursday, which has come five months after the elections.
As the government has announced the reservation, Renuka Bai Venkatesh,
representing ward number 15, is all set to become the Mayor of
Davangere, as she is the only eligible candidate.
It
may be recalled that the Congress swept city corporation elections a few
months ago by winning in 39 of the 42 wards. Moreover, the Congress
leaders would not have to struggle to find a suitable candidate for the
Mayor’s post as Ms. Venkatesh is already there, albeit without any
competitor. However, for the post of Deputy Mayor, there are many
aspirants and the party high command has an arduous task in picking up
the right candidate.
Brisk activity
As
the reservation for Mayor and Deputy Mayors’ posts was announced five
months after the elections, the councillors, who had been harping for
power, have begun making their own calculations. There was brisk
political activity in the city corporation on Thursday.
Meanwhile,
many councillors expressed happiness over the announcement of
reservation. According to them, once the Mayor and Deputy Mayor got
elected, they would be able to get several schemes completed quickly by
prevailing upon corporation officials. Hitherto, they were unable to get
drinking water supplied to people regularly, or get the garbage cleared
from streets in their wards, the councillors said.
