Retired engineers to help BMCProving that it is very serious about improving the city’s water distribution system, the civic body is seeking the help of retired hydraulic engineers to improve it. For more than two weeks now, due to some incomprehensible operational snags in the system, the civic body is unable to supply sufficient water to the city. Besides, the faults in the distribution system also result in loss of more than 20 per cent of the water that is supplied to the city.
Municipal commissioner Swadheen Kshatriya, agreed, last week, that there was some technical problem in maintaining reservoir levels. He also said they were taking the help of retired and experienced officials to solve the problem. They have approached two retired hydraulic engineers Anand Deodhar and N H Kusnur. Deodhar confirmed that the commissioner had asked them to help the hydraulic department. “It has been a while since we retired from service. I will have to study the changes introduced in the system after I left,” Deodhar told Hindustan Times.
Ashwini Mate, Shiv Sena corporator from Ghatkopar, said people in her ward were suffering because of the negligence of the water department, “They came with a morcha outside my house on Wednesday. What should I tell them?” Mate said.
Corporator Mangesh Satamkar from Pratiksha Nagar, Sion, said there are no flow meters on the reservoirs.
Additional municipal commissioner, Aseem Gupta, in charge of the water department, said it was the department’s priority to install flow meters on water mains and reservoirs.
