Pune: The burns unit of the Sassoon General Hospital is set for a revamp with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) allotting Rs 10 lakh towards it, according to Dr Arun Jamkar, dean, BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital.
“We had applied for funds from the state government, but to no avail,” Jamkar said, adding that the surgery department will be in charge of the burns ward. On an average, 35-40 patients are admitted to the ward daily.
Jamkar said plans were also afoot to start a skin bank. “Dr S Keswani, in-charge of the National Burns Centre, had visited the hospital for the purpose and we are taking the matter ahead.”
He said the hospital received several bodies for post-mortem examination while many of them remained unidentified. With due permission, the hospital can utilise them for the skin bank project. “It costs Rs 40 lakh to run a skin bank and hopefully the project will begin soon.”
