Rs.1.5 crore allocated for water project
The State government has allocated Rs.1.5 crore for the
implementation of a drinking water project at Colachel in Kanyakumari
district under the Integrated Urban Development Project (IUDP).
Laying
the foundation stone for the project at Colachel on Sunday, Forest
Minister K.T.Pachaimal said two overhead tanks – one with a capacity of 3
lakh litres near Kamaraj bus stand and the other with a capacity of 2
lakh litres near Our Lady of Presentation Church — were being
constructed at a total cost of Rs.75 lakh. A 30 KW solar unit with three
generators was also being installed here at a cost of Rs.75 lakh.
Later,
the Minister distributed free laptops to 307 students at Sree Devi
Kumari Women’s College at Kuzhithurai. Speaking on the occasion, he said
scholarships amounting to Rs.5.36 crore had been distributed to 22,199
school students belonging to the backward and the most backward classes
in the district. Free laptops were being given to 31,932 students in the
district in the first phase, he said, and added that already 30,768
students had received them.
