Several colonies inundated in city
HYDERABAD: Heavy rain lashing the city for the past few days, has inundated several colonies and in some areas water gushed into houses. Residents of Serlingampally, Miyapur, Kukatpally, LB Nagar, Bowenpally and Nacharam were the worst hit.
For the second time in a week, the National Highway 9 was under a sheet of water in Kukatpally area. Storm water has not receded till Thursday evening in colonies, especially in Serilingampally area.
With inflows too steadily increasing in Hussainagar lake, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has alerted residents of down stream localities along the nala.
The 13 cm rain on Wednesday evening created havoc in colonies like Pragati Nagar, Widia colony, Shankar Nagar, Adarsh Nagar, Deepthi Sri Nagar, ICRISAT colony, Annapurna Enclave, Vemkunta, Gautam Nagar, Jawaharnagar, Indirangar and Janapriya colony. These colonies are surrounded by tanks and lakes like Ramasamudram, Gurunath Chervu, Patel Chervu, Gangaram Chervu, Hafeezpet Chervu, Veerlakunta Chervu, Kagitham Chervu and Nadigandla Thanda tank.
“Culverts at Shilpa Enclave and Gautam Nagar suffered breaches due to the heavy downpour. As a result, downstream colonies like Jawaharnagar were inundated,” Serilingampally executive engineer A Ramesh Gupta told TOI.
To allow storm water to flow on, officials dismantled some encroachments and compound walls on Thursday.
Residents of colonies like Deepthisri Nagar are still in knee-deep water. They alleged that officials allowed encroachments on storm water drains in and around the colony, resulting in their colony getting inundated.
“As water entered into our houses, some did not go to offices, while women could not come out of their houses for buying milk or other essentials,” K Chandrasekhar, a resident of Deepthisri Nagar colony, told TOI.
The National Highway 9 at Kukatpally `Y’ junction and Moosapet areas were flooded with storm water on Wedneday, resulting in traffic jams. Dharaninagar near Allwyn colony roads was also inundated.
With the Picket nala overflowing, water entered colonies like Bapughat near Minister’s Road and low-lying areas like Maurthi Nagar, Srinivas Nagar and Bapujinagar in Bowenpally. With increasing inflows into the Kukatpally nala, storm water flooded some houses in Brahmanwadi and Matajinagar.
Areas in LB Nagar and Kapra municipal circles also witnessed flooding due to heavy downpour on Wednesday night. Jillelaguda chervu, Pedda chervu and Nalla chervu, which have been overflowing for the past few days, inundated Vijayapuri colony, Sagar Enclave, Gunti Jangaiah Colony and APSEB colony in
LB Nagar.
“One of the reasons for inundation is some of the house owners have constructed slabs and ramps on kachha drains at Adhikarinagar, Srisai Nagar and Gunti Jangaiah colony that caused water gushing into houses,” L B Nagar deputy municipal commissioner K Satyanarayana told TOI.
Water receded in some areas after officials cleared obstacles for storm water to flow into Saroornagar lake.
