Chandigarh: Nearly six years after it was proposed, the Municipal Corporation is all set to invite tenders for the Sewerage Treatment Plant at 3 BRD.The civic body has finalised upon the technology to be used at the plant, which would treat over 50 Million Litres Daily (MLD) effluents each day. The treated water would be used for irrigation, which would in turn help save drinking water that has so far been used for irrigation.
The proposal for the STP was mooted in 2004, following which it received the Administrative approval in 2005. Tenders for construction were invited twice, first in November 2007 and then in May 2008. Due to higher rates quoted, the tenders were cancelled.
The issue was raised in the House Meet last year by Area Councillor Jatinder Bhatia, who had said that five years after the project was mooted, it had been forgotten by the authorities.
The residents are being forced to live in unhygienic conditions due to the open drain in the area and the problem could be rectified only by setting up the plant, the area councillor had argued.
The civic body has now finalised the technology and tenders for construction would be invited soon
