HYDERABAD: Amid sloganeering and subsequent boycott by Telugu Desam and BJP corporators, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) nominated area ‘sabha’ representatives at a special meeting here on Tuesday.
The corporators from TDP and BJP disrupted the proceedings chaired by Mayor B. Karthika Reddy and held placards demanding a special meeting to discuss the civic amenities and also raised objections to the way the area sabha nominations were taken up.
The BJP floor leader Bangari Prakash remarked, “in the name of nominations from civil society, the ‘sabhas’ are being used to rehabilitate your party people”.
The visit of Congress MLAs including D.Sudheer Reddy and Bikshapathi Yadav to the Mayor’s chambers before the meeting turned into an issue of contention for corporators of these two parties. “The ruling party along with their allied party is getting their dummy candidates nominated. Their MLAs were here to get their persons nominated and in protest we walked out,” TDP floor leader Singireddy Srinivas Reddy told presspersons later.
The MBT corporator Amjadullah Khan joined the protest after demanding an immediate discussion on the road and other civic conditions.
The MIM corporators too sought a meeting to discuss the prevailing civic conditions in the city and the Mayor promised to convene the same after the Dasara festival.
Soon after it began, the meeting was marred by TDP and BJP members trooping in and preventing the Mayor from continuing the proceedings.
Only after repeated requests from her and arguments, the members took their seats but within minutes followed their floor leaders to stage a walkout.
With Congress and MIM corporators left in the hall, a quick check for quorum was followed by the nomination process with names read out by the corporators and seconded by their colleagues.
A total of 1,081 area sabha representatives were nominated.
