Special BBMP Act on the anvil
Bangalore, September 3, DHNS:
The Palike may hold a special council meeting to formulate a special BBMP Act as recommended by the Agenda for Bengaluru Infrastructure and Development Task Force (ABIDe).
During the debate on municipal body’s budget for 2010-11, the matter came up for discussion when Padmanabha Reddy said there was need for a Mayor-in-Council system in Bangalore, similar to other cities of the country. This would empower the Mayor to take decision on his own.
Furthering the discussion, the leader of the ruling BJP in the Council, Katte Satyanarayana said the 74th amendment of the Constitution was passed by the erstwhile government without any discussion.
“There is still hope to bring a system in place if a separate BBMP Act is passed by the Union Government,” he said and added that even MP of Bangalore South constituency Ananth Kumar advocated it and has asked the Palike to pass a resolution and send it the Centre.
He felt that Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily would also help Palike get it cleared. Later talking to Deccan Herald, Satyanarayana said this was a much-needed Act since it would enable the Mayor to clear resolutions without waiting for administrative approval and his five-year term would help take some resolute steps.
