Standing committee chairpersons elected

Kozhikode: Nominees of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) were elected chairpersons of seven of the eight standing committees of the Corporation council in the elections held on Thursday.
Congress councillor P. Usha Devi was elected chairperson of the standing committee on Education and Sports.
M. Radhakrishnan (Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPI-M ) was elected standing committee chairperson on Welfare; Anita Rajan (Nationalist Congress Party), Development; Janamma Kunjunni (CPI-M), Health; M. Mohanan (CPI-M), Public Works; T. Rajani (CPI-M), Town Planning; and T. Moideen Koya ( CPI-M), Tax and Appeal.
P.T. Abdul Latheef, Deputy Mayor, had already been elected chairman of the standing committee on Finance soon after the elections to the post.
The standing committees on Finance and Development have 10 members each while others, nine members.
The members of the standing committees were elected last week.
Then the LDF had secured the majority in the Finance, Development, Public Works, Health, Welfare, Town Planning and Tax and Appeal committees.
The LDF has 41 members, including two NCP members, and the UDF, 34 in the 75-member council.
A woman councillor was elected to each of these committees.
The chairpersonship of the standing committees on Education-Sports, Development, Health and Town Development was reserved for women.
