The members of eight standing committees of Kochi Corporation will be elected on Friday.
KOCHI: The standing committees in the newly elected municipalities,
district panchayat, and village and block panchayats in the district
have been formed. Members of 429 standing committees were elected on
Thursday. The election of members of eight standing committees of Kochi
Corporation will be held on Friday.
Seventy nine grama panchayats accounted for 316 standing committees
while 60 standing committees have been formed in ten municipalities.
Forty eight such committees have been formed in 12 block panchayats
while five panels have come into being in the district panchayat.
While four standing committees each have been formed at the grama
panchayat and block panchayat levels, six such panels have been formed
in municipalities and five in the district panchayat.
In municipalities standing committees have been formed on finance,
development, welfare, health, public works, and education, and arts and
sports.
In the district panchayat the panels were on finance, development,
public works, health, education, and welfare. Panels comprising five
members have been formed in the district panchayat except in case of
finance committee.
Since the district panchayat vice-chairman is also the chairman of
the finance standing committee, only the remaining four members have to
be selected.
The corporation will have standing committees on finance,
development, welfare, health, public works, urban planning, tax-appeal,
and education and sports. The election of chairmen of standing
committees in district panchayat, village and block panchayats, and
municipalities will be held on November 24. Standing committee chairmen
of corporation will be elected the next day.
All members of governing committees should be members of any of the standing committees.
One post in every standing committee had been reserved for women.
Besides, the posts of chairmen of half the standing committees had been
reserved for women.
Vice-chairmen of municipalities and three-tier panchayats will be the chairmen of one of the standing committees.
In places where the post of vice chairmen had been reserved for
women, the reservation for women in standing committees would be after
considering it.
