State puts Hogenakkal project on right track
December 24th, 2010
Dec. 23: The municipal administration and water supply
department has quietly completed a prolonged process of finalizing the
bids for all the five packages of the Rs 1,928 crore Hogenakkal water
supply project. In the latest round, construction major L&T has
bagged two crucial packages worth Rs 580 crore. Civil works are expected
to gather pace after Pongal.
“Works have already begun in three out of five packages
including construction of pumping station in Hogenakkal. The remaining
two packages have been finalized after the approval from the Japanese
authorities who fund the mega water project,” remarked a senior
official.
Deputy chief minister M.K. Stalin, who holds the local
administration portfolio, will soon be visiting Dharmapuri to personally
supervise the progress of the project. The package three costing Rs 182
crore will cover three panchayat unions such as Harur, Morappur and
Pappireddipatty. The fifth package worth Rs 398 crore covers five unions
including Krishnagiri, Bargur, Palacode, Karimangalam, and
Kaveripattinam. A total of 3,400 hamlets will be covered by both the
packages.
The contractor L&T will be given 24 months to
complete the civil work of establishing distribution lines and
construction of sumps and overhead tanks in the region. By awarding all
five packages, the process of bidding attained finality and the
authorities can concentrate on the execution part.
More than 25 lakh people from the water-starved Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts will benefit by the scheme.
