Stray dogs in Kancheepuram to be sterilised
About 1,900 stray and feral dogs have been identified in
Kancheepuram town for animal birth control (ABC) and anti-rabies
vaccination (ARV).
According to the Kancheepuram
municipality, a new survey was conducted in the town recently and it was
found that 1,786 stray dogs and 198
mongrels/severely-wounded/chronically-sick dogs exist in the municipal
area.
In association with Blue Cross (Kancheepuram), the civic body has spayed 891 stray and feral dogs.
The
animals were caught in batches and taken to a centre in Kunnam village
where they were spayed/neutered. Civic body staff has been trained on
new techniques such as Lincoln’s Mark and Recapture Techniques to
promote welfare of stray dogs.
The civic body also
proposes to involve and motivate nearby town and village panchayats to
take measures to rid the region of stray dog menace.
The
civic body has asked the general public to pass on information about
movement of stray dogs in their locality by contacting on 044-27222801.
The municipality has also initiated efforts to take care of stray dogs at its own cost.
Directed to vaccinate
Owners
of domesticated/pet dogs have been directed to vaccinate their animals
at the earliest and inform municipality officials, a press release said.
