Student rally on rainwater harvesting

Hundreds of school students and National Cadet Corps
cadets participated in an awareness rally on rainwater harvesting
organised by the Vellore Corporation here on Wednesday.
At
the head of the rally was a model of a house equipped with a perfect
rainwater harvesting structure, mounted on a vehicle. It showed rain
water from the roof of the house being collected in a rainwater
harvesting pit containing brick pieces at the bottom layer, pebbles and
stones at the middle layer and sand at the top layer. The water filtered
in the pit empties into a well.
P. Sankar,
Collector, flagged off the rally in front of the New Corporation
Building. The rally went through Military Bazaar Road, Deter Line, R.C.
Church Road, Anna Salai and Arni Road before reaching the Old
Corporation Building.
A Corporation staffer made
announcements over the mike urging the public to construct rainwater
harvesting structures in their houses and other commercial and public
utility buildings .
Those who already had non-functional rainwater harvesting structures were asked to revive them.
Vinnin
Mazhai Thuli, Mannin Uyir Thuli’ (a raindrop is a drop of life for the
soil); ‘Mazhaineerai Veenaga Vidalama, Kudineerai Vilai Koduthu
Vangalama’ (can we afford to waste rainwater and buy drinking water)
were some of the messages found on placards carried by students.
Pamphlets were also distributed.
