Thrissur getting bogged down in mounds of garbage
Road near Sakthan Nagar turns into a dumping yard
Though the Thrissur Corporation managed to enter into a
contract with a private agency for garbage disposal, the city’s
sanitation condition has not improved a bit.The
Salem-based company, which removed two loads of waste for one day has
not turned up after that. The rotten waste collected from various parts
of the city has been heaped on Pattalam Road, located in the heart of
the city, for the past one week.
The entire road near
Sakthan Nagar has turned into a huge dumping yard. People have started
avoiding the arterial road because of the unbearable stench emanating
from it.To make matters worse, people have begun to
dispose of household waste onto the streets as the corporation has
started collecting garbage from various points.
The
corporation sources said that the company was not able to remove the
garbage owing to shortage of workers. According to the tender
conditions, the company would remove 400 tonnes of waste in a week at a
rate of Rs. 2,700 per tonne. Those who oppose the contract allege that
the company failed to fulfil the conditions in the first week itself.
In
the past one week it removed only 51 tonnes of garbage, they said. The
CPI(M) councillors have been opposing the tender since the beginning
alleging lack of transparency in the tender procedures. They alleged
that it would destabilise the corporation’s efforts to decentralise
garbage treatment.
Meanwhile, the Sarvodhaya Mandalam
demanded the corporation to employ the Salem company to remove the
accumulated garbage from the Lalur dumping yard along with the city
garbage.
