UDF to prepare a development agenda for the city: Mayor
KOCHI: The civic administration will lay emphasis on the speedy
implementation of the ongoing projects in the city, said Tony Chammany,
City Mayor.
With the election of chairpersons and formation of various standing
committees, the newly elected civic administration has got down to its
business. The first full-fledged meeting of the corporation council will
be held on Tuesday.
Various projects funded under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban
Renewal Mission (JNNURM), and the ones implemented with the funds of the
city corporation are in various stages of implementation. There are a
few other works that have been tendered during the term of the previous
council. There are also works that need to be completed before the end
of the financial year. The civic administration is presently focusing on
the timely completion of these works, Mr. Chammany said.
Road repair works in the city began on Sunday and the work on
Chittoor road was the first one taken up. Work on roads for which the
tendering process was completed will be implemented soon. Incidentally,
the repair work of the dilapidated Thammanam-Pullepady road has not been
included in any of the projects. The civic administration needs to find
out a solution for carrying out the repair work on this stretch, he
said.
The repair work on the Vyttila-Ravipuram stretch is implemented under
the JNNURM project and the repair work has started at the Ravipuram
area.
The inclement weather is the only stumbling block in the completion
of the work, including the resurfacing of the south overbridge, he said.
Mr. Chammany complained that the civic administration didn’t get the
desired support from the city police for the implementation of the road
repair works. Though the cooperation of the police was sought for
diverting the traffic along the Chittoor road on Sunday, it didn’t
materialise.
The repair works would have progressed smoothly had the police closed
the road for traffic on Sunday. The issue would be taken up with the
city police authorities shortly, he said.
The UDF will soon come out with its development agenda for the city
and the manner in which it plans to implement it. A development seminar
will be convened to elicit the view of various stakeholders.
The seminar will list out the priorities of the front in this regard, Mr. Chammany said.
