Tiruchi to get 13 Livelihood Centres
The Tiruchirappali City Corporation plans to set up City
Hope Centres and Common Livelihood Centres at 13 places to generate
employment for urban poor people.
It will facilitate
them to utilise the machines, tools, and facilities at the centres,
which are common to all. A sum of Rs. 2.5 crore had been sought under
the Challenge Fund from the Ministry of Housing and Poverty Alleviation.
A senior official of the corporation recently told
The Hindu
that common dry wash centre, common tailoring centre, common production
centre for low-cost sanitary napkin, bath soap and detergent powder were
established. The centres would have facilities for food products. There
was a move to set up canteen in the livelihood centres.
There
was a strong need for concerted efforts to empower the poor and
vulnerable people, who were left out in the poverty reduction
initiatives. A network, consisting corporation, non-governmental
organisations, and other institutions, would be created to identify
resources, job opportunities, financial links, training, and related
activities. Once the project was sanctioned, steps would be taken to
identify the target groups through a participatory approach. The
beneficiaries could be either unemployed individuals and groups
identified from the urban poor of 286 slums. They would be categorised
into groups for providing support appropriate skill training, employment
opportunities, and marketing links.
He said the
centres would have sewing and embroidery machines, electrical iron boxes
for common tailoring centre, dry washing machines, and electric iron
boxes for common dry washing centre, cooking equipment, utensils, RO
water purification plant for low-cost meal centre, and so on.
