Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) decision on Monday to make parking free for two-wheelers within city limits is in contrast to what the city cops had proposed about five months ago.In fact, the cops had forwarded a proposal to the civic body to bring in a ‘graded system’ of parking charges as per the National Urban Transport Policy (NUTP) norms to reduce traffic congestion.
The NUTP norms say parking charges for first few hours be minimal but rates should increase per hour as per commercial importance of the area. The proposal suggested an incentive for those who park vehicles for fewer hours.
The proposal for two-wheelers said Rs 2 every hour for the first two hours in parking lots and Rs 5 every hour for parking on the roadside. In parking lots, the third hour will cost Rs 5 and Rs 10 every hour thereafter. Similarly, the proposal said the charges in parking lots would be less than that for the roadside parking.
“We had forwarded a proposal of the graded parking system to the civic body about four months ago that said the rates for parking in covered parking lots would be lower compared to that on road. Many people feel it is convenient to park on roads. There are others who pay only for an hour and park the vehicle for the entire day along the road. However, since the civic body has taken a different decision, we will follow it,” a senior traffic official said.
