UID scheme to begin in city from Dec 1The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will begin the central government’s unique identification card (UID) scheme from December 1 in the city. The UID project is the brainchild of technocrat Nandan Nilekani, and the card will ensure that families get access to all the schemes of the government and local bodies.
“The state government will be finalising the time-frame and giving us the vendors and then we will decide the logistics for this project,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner, Manisha Mhaiskar.
The BMC may need about
10 vendors to cover the biometrics of the entire city and so far they have managed to get just one.
One biometric machine will cover over 60 people in one day.
The BMC is planning to keep centres to get UID.
“We presently don’t know the deadline and how many vendors will be given to us,” said a civic official, on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
The UID will be the only required document in few years down the line. Citizens should ensure they visit the centres and get their UID done.
The scheme said all the legitimate residents of the city, including those from outside the state as well as country, will be eligible to get a number under the central government’s Unique Identification (UID) Scheme.
The BMC will start a pilot project in one ward, likely to be D ward, which includes areas like Nana Chowk, Tardeo and Malabar Hill.
