Urban population up by 36.2 p.c. in State since 2001
The urban population in the State increased by 36.26 per cent, while that of the rural areas went up by 1.64 per cent respectively during the decadal growth from 2001 according to the 15{+t}{+h}census carried out in the country from February 9 to 28.
According to a press release issued by the Director of Census Operations, Andhra Pradesh here on Wednesday, the urban population accounted for 2,83,53,745 (33.49 p.c.) of the total population (8,46, 65, 533), while the rural population stood at 5,63,11, 788 (66.51 p.c.). Of the total population 4,25,09,881 are males (50.21 p.c.) and 4,21,55, 652 females (49.79 p.c.). The absolute increase over 2001 census in respect of total population is 84,55,526 (11.10 p.c.). The proportion of urban population in the State increased from 27.30 p.c. in 2001 to 33 p.c.
At the national level, the total population is 121 crore, of which the rural and urban composition is 83.31 crore (68.84 p.c.) and 37.71 crore (31.16 p.c.) respectively. The proportion of the urban population went up from 27.81 p.c. in 2001 to 31.16 p.c. in 2011 at the national level.
Sex ratio
The sex ratio (the number of females for every 1,000 males) in the State increased from 978 in 2001 to 992 this year.
It increased in rural areas from 983 to 995 and from 965 to 984 in urban areas. Among the districts, the highest sex ratio in rural areas was found in Nizamabad at 1,047 and the lowest was in Ranga Reddy district at 968.
In the urban areas in the districts, the highest sex ratio was found in Vizianagaram (1,037) and the lowest in Hyderabad (943).
Child population
The child population (0-6 years) in the State has declined from 13.35 per cent in 2001 to 10.21 per cent 2011. The child population has been recorded as 86,42,686 of which 58,52, 284 is rural and 27,90,402 urban.
Literacy rate
The literacy rate in the State was recorded as 67.66 p.c. with 61.14 p.c. rural areas and 80.54 in urban places. Among the rural areas, maximum literacy was registered in West Godavari (72.46 p.c.) and minimum in Mahabubnagar (51.97 p.c.). In urban areas too, the highest was in West Godavari (84.92 p.c.) and lowest in Kurnool district (73.57 p.c.).
The gap in male-female literacy rate in both urban and rural areas has come down.
