Vadodara municipal corporation opposition raises eyebrows over water tank project
VADODARA: The opposition in the Vadodara Municipal Corporation
(VMC) has opposed the construction of an overhead water tank and sumps
at Vijaynagar on the Gorwa-Laxmipura Road. It has demanded that the
project should be relocated.
Opposition leader and Congress councillor Chinnam Gandhi
has stated that the project was approved by the standing committee of
the civic body on July 27. Gandhi said that Vijaynagar was a slum pocket
that had existed since 35 years at the plot that was selected for the
project. Gandhi saidthat water, drainage and power connections had also
been provided at Vijaynagar.
Gandhi alleged that
the site was selected for the project to ensure that the slums were
removed. This, he claimed, was being done to help certain realtors. He
said that if the project was to be implemented, the residents of
Vijaynagar should be rehabilitated first.
Gandhi
claimed that the VMC water supplied department had earlier turned down a
demand for setting up the water tank with sumps stating that the city
had a master plan in place for its requirements till 2018. He claimed
that it was stated that the in the command area where the tank had been
suggested there was no plan to set up one under the master plan. Gandhi
has threatened to conduct an agitation over the issue.
