with pig rearers staged a protest here on Monday against the killing of
stray pigs in the twin cities. The protesters marched
from the Ambedkar statue near the Head Post Office to the Mini Vidhana
Soudha. They said that the municipal corporation had meted out injustice
to the pig rearers.
The protesters, led by president
of the vedike Gangadhar Perur, submitted a memorandum addressed to
Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar. In it, they said
that the municipal corporation should pay compensation to the pig
rearers if it decides to transport stray pigs out of the city or put
them down, as it would be snatching away the rearers’ livelihood.
They
urged the government to allot 100 acres of land for pig farming and
also promote the same in the State. They wanted the government to
sanction loans of up to Rs. 2 lakh to pig rearers.
