VMC gearing up to increase office space
Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is planning to reorganise its office space by renovating the buildings it was currently occupying and constructing new buildings in different locations in the city. It is planning to construct a new administrative building in Gunadala to meet its future requirements.
The Corporation officials identified land belonging to the SPDCL in Gunadala. Though ten acres are available the corporation is asking for only half of the land. The Corporation officials wrote a letter to Krishna district collector Peeyush Kumar urging him to take necessary steps. It will be “quid pro quo” between two organisations that were rendering public services, officials say.
The Corporation is also planning to give a face lift to the main building from which it is currently functioning. The School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) has “in principle” agreed to take up the project. As part of the renovation and beautification proposals, the SPA will alter the elevation of the building “without causing any damage to the heritage character of the building.” A new block will be constructed near Council hall as the existing office space is not sufficient to house the different wings in the Corporation. The proposed new block will cater to the needs of accounts, administration and commissioner’s office, officials say.
The building that is currently housing the legal cell and revenue wings will be pulled down as it is in a dilapidated condition. A new block, with a cellar, will be constructed in phase-II of the project at the spot.
In case, the proposals for the land at Gundala materialise, the current building will be made zonal office, and new building at Gunadala will be the main administrative office, officials say.
