VIJAYAWDA: After receiving the ‘Best City Award’ a couple of weeks ago, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is now set to receive ‘Best Municipal Corporation in Energy Conservation Award’ shortly.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Municipal Commissioner G. Ravi Babu said that the ‘New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Limited’, earlier known as NEDCAP, shortlisted the VMC as the best municipal corporation in energy conservation.
Referring to the Best City under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) award, he said that Vijayawada was selected for the year 2009-10 among 64 JNNURM cities. Providing civic amenities like water supply, sewerage, collection of garbage, city sanitation, street-lighting, and access to roads were some of the factors that contributed to the selection of the city for the award, he said.
Development works
Speaking on developmental activities, Mr. Ravi Babu said that Pune-based Ghani Constructions Limited (GCL) made a presentation on Tuesday to Railway officials for constructing a box culvert using trench-less technology. The project would take off if the Railway officials were satisfied with the technical know-how and expertise of the firm. The GCL took up similar tasks in Mumbai and Hyderabad. It constructed culverts under railway tracks using trench-less technology. The proposed box culvert near Gandhi Hill would address the storm water problem in One Town area, he said.
The VMC set a target for itself to complete the pending underground drainage works in One Town by December 31. A sewage treatment plant at Jakkampudi and storm water drains in One Town would also be completed at the earliest, he said.
Referring to his visit to Manila in Philippines, the Commissioner said that Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA) sanctioned about Rs. 2.5 crores to Vijayawada for preparing pre-feasibility reports for the identified projects by engaging national and international experts. The Asian Development Bank would sanction loan based on the feasibility reports, he said.
