VMC to install cellphone jammers in assembly hall
VADODARA: Vadodara Municipal Corporation ( VMC) is set to install cellular phone jammers in the assembly hall, where the general board meetings are held. The civic body will become the first one in Gujarat to do so as it was noticed that on several occasions councillors were spotted talking on mobile phones during the general board proceedings.
A proposal in this regard was sent by municipal commissioner M K Das to the standing committee of the civic body. The committee will take up the proposal for discussion on Friday. Officials have already approached various vendors supplying the equipment and have finalised one.
The assembly branch of the municipal corporation had sought that jammers must be installed in the hall. The demand was made because the officials felt that use of mobile phones caused disturbance in the proceedings and also lead to lapse of concentration from the work.
Sources said that the permission of the city police commissioner was necessary for installing the equipment. The civic body has already written a letter in this regard to the police commissioner.
Officials said that the equipment will be installed at a cost of Rs 28,750. The vendor selected to provide the equipment has already installed it at various central and state government offices.
The councillors including those from the opposition Congress party too have welcomed the decision. Said opposition leader Chirag Zaveri, “This should have been done long back. There are several councillors who talk on mobiles even when the general board meetings are on.”
BJP councillors too have welcomed the move. “When inside the hall, we must concentrate on the proceedings there. There is no need to talk on phones during this period,” said BJP councillor Ashok Pandya.
