Statehood demand: BJP corporator K Satish destroys budget proposal papers demanding separate Telangana during the council meet in Warangal on Wednesday.
WARANGAL: The general body meeting of the Warangal Municipal Corporation (WMC) turned chaotic with the Opposition members boycotting the meeting demanding its cancellation.
Members of TRS, TDP, CPI, CPI (M) and BJP refused to go inside. TRS MLA D. Vinay Bhaskar, TDP corporator G. Sudha Rani, BJP corporator K. Satish and others wanted the meeting to be cancelled in support of separate Telangana.
The general body meeting was convened to pass the yearly budget of the corporation.
Ms.Sudha Rani said as all the corporators submitted their resignation, there should be no meeting.
She said Mayor E. Swarna herself took part in the separate Telangana meetings and urged people not to cooperate with the administration. “She even asked the people not to pay their taxes. What is the need for a meeting now?”
As the Opposition members were staging a demonstration in front of the office, Mayor and Warangal East MLA B. Saraiah too joined them for a while and later entered the hall to conduct the meeting.
Both the Opposition and ruling party members exchanged words. Ms. Swarna accused the TDP, TRS and other members of craving for publicity taking advantage of the situation.
She said the corporation could only adopt a resolution on the issue urging the State and Central governments to look into the issue.
The Congress members went ahead with the budget meeting inside the hall. But Mr. Satish of BJP hastily entered the hall, snatched the budget papers and flung them in the air after tearing them into pieces in protest.
Later, the budget proposal for Rs. 83.05 crore was adopted by the 30 Congress members. In the 50-member council, the TDP has 15, TRS 4, CPI (M) 2 and CPI and BJP one each.
