Water board earmarks Rs 33 crore to tackle emergency situations

With water levels depleting alarmingly in the two major water
reservoirs, the city water board (HMWS&SB) has kick-started
emergency pumping arrangements for Krishna Phase I and II and Singoor
system by earmarking Rs 33 crore under contingency action plan.
An amount of Rs 22 crore for Krishna Phase I and II and Rs 11 crore for Singoor system has been appropriated.
The
HMWS&SB is supplying 340 MGD of water on an average to Greater
Hyderabad. Of this, Singur supplies 75 MGD, Manjeera 45 MGD and Krishna
Phase I and II 180 MGD.
As water levels in Krishna would go down below 508 feet soon, the water board has to make emergency pumping compulsorily.
Irrigation
department officials have already sent signals to the water board to be
ready with the emergency arrangements to tackle the prevailing water
shortage situation.
The HMWS&SB officials told Express that
tenders have been floated for Rs 11 crore for emergency pumping at head
works at Puttamgandi including repairs and replacement of existing
pumps and motors, panel and transformers.
Another Rs 6.50 crore
have been sanctioned for providing spares to pumps and motors panels,
substations at Kodandapur, Nasarlapally, Godakondla, Mailardevpally and
Lingampally as the customised spares are not readily available in the
market.
A sum of Rs 2.50 crore has been allotted for repairs and
replacement of Non Return Valves (NRVs) and Butterfly Valves (BF) to
Krishna Phase-I and Phase-II at Kodandapur, Narsarlapally, Godakondla,
Mailardevpally etc for the smooth functioning of the pumping system
during the power failure or tripping.
Another Rs 2 crore for
additional power feeder mains at Banjara Hills, Venkatgiri, Lingampally,
Moulali and Sainikpuri will help in maintaining uninterrupted power to
pumping system.
Similarly, for Singoor system tenders, about Rs 11 crore has been floated.
They
said the water level is expected to fall to 515 metres in April 2013
and water cannot be drawn by gravity for which board has to resort to
pumping from dead storage by erecting emergency pumping arrangements up
to 510 metres. For this, Rs 1 crore has been sanctioned for emergency
pumps and 100 HP motors at Singoor Dam.
Another Rs 5 crore is
sanctioned for providing of spares to pumps and motors, panels,
sub-stations at Singoor dam, Peddapur, Kalabgoor, Rajampet, Patancheru
and Lingampally, they added.
