Water shortage in Coonoor municipality
With Raliah Dam, the main source of water to Coonoor,
remaining dry following de-silting operations initiated in summer and
the storage in other local sources depleting rapidly due to lack of
rain, the civic administration is finding it increasingly difficult to
meet the water requirements of the residents and the floating
population.
Since water supply is becoming increasingly erratic, municipal officials are resorting to various means to augment supply.
In
keeping with this work on sinking a mini well on a piece of municipal
land at Mission Hill near V.P. Street had commenced a few days ago.
However, it has run into rough weather with some of the residents opining that it was not a suitable place for a well.
However, the Municipal Commissioner, A. Shanmugamn, told
The Hindu
that it will help ease the problem and added that since the well would
be covered it will not be a source of inconvenience to pedestrians.
